| The spirit bottles of Haiti
are one of the standards of Voodoo. They are each handmade by the
sorcerer out of scraps and found materials and every one is unique.
A sort of spell, the colors and symbols determine the sort of action the
bottle will be used for and then herbs and oils are added, sometimes with
bone scrapings or personal objects. They appear on most Voodoo
altars and are traditionally used for protection from evil or for
communication with spirits. Our prop bottle has a bone cross (pork
bones) which represents a person and is wrapped in some of the symbolic
colors particular to the Kongo faith and to Haiti: red represents sexual
desire, magical power and compromise and can also mean the sun, while
black stands for guilt, evil, disorder and the land of the living, and
white symbolizes truth, health, clarity, and the land of the dead.
This prop bottle is meant for decorative use only and should be considered a replica. It is not a true spirit bottle. |
